'The Living Stones' (5 Parts) by Lee Pressman |
In the picturesque English village of Mulberrywood, Jade Weston sees the night sky light up as a meteor falls to earth. Elsewhere, in the woods, a poacher discovers a strange, pod-like stone lying in a crater; the object opens, expelling an unearthly green light that attacks the man… the next morning, the poacher’s wife, Mrs Toms, discovers that her husband now has glowing green eyes and a sensitivity to bright light. When Jade sees another meteor fall in the woods that night, she sneaks out of the house with her dog, Jessie and a camera; she soon finds a pod-like rock, but just as the object begins to open, revealing a green glow, the sudden arrival of a group of men in contagion suits causes it to abruptly close. After Jessie runs off with the pod, the men take Jade to a nearby Ministry of Defence base, where she meets the leader of the operation, General Damon. When the General attempts to debrief Jade, she refuses to give anything away, and so he orders her photographs to be developed; amongst the shots of the meteor, Damon is surprised to find a picture of Jade with his son, Megabyte. Meanwhile, having said goodbye to Ami and her mother as they left for Australia, Adam and Megabyte are enjoying an evening of delivery pizza and trashy videos when the General phones home. Learning that he has Jade, Megabyte and Adam instantly teleport to Damon’s office, where they learn that Worldex has been called in to investigate the fallen meteorites in an operation codenamed ‘Project X31’. Reunited with their friend, the two Tomorrow People persuade her to recount her story. Back at Jade’s house, Mrs Weston’s concern for the whereabouts of her daughter is interrupted by the arrival of Jessie and the pod; as the sphere opens, Jade’s mother is taken over by a glowing, green creature. While General Damon locks horns with the base’s resident commanding officer, General Beaumont-Savage, Adam and Megabyte escort Jade back to her house; here the girl finds her mother now wearing dark glasses and behaving very oddly. Back at the spaceship, Adam and Megabyte ponder the mysterious stone-like pods; Megabyte suggests visiting Professor Beth Halliday, a botanist friend of the family who works at Kew Gardens. Having collect Jade, Adam and Megabyte show the professor the blurred photos of the pod, but Beth fails to recognise the object, and can find no record of it in her research library. Returning to Mulberrywood, Adam, Megabyte and Jade come across General Damon and his team retrieving another meteor from the village pond; after Jade sees a little old lady with glowing green eyes collect a second, undiscovered pod, she follows the woman to a tunnel on the outskirts of the village, near Lucifer Hall, home of rock music legend Byron Lucfier. Inside, Jade sees an unearthly green mist full of glowing spores swirling around several zombie-like villagers – including her mother. Doctor Bradley analyses the sphere, and determines it to be a pod containing spores; however, before he can investigate further, the rock opens and a terrifying creature possesses him. Now in a zombie-like trance, Bradley attempts to leave the building, but General Damon intercepts him, and in the ensuing fight, the creature vacates the doctor’s body and escapes into the ventilation system. Adam and Megabyte attend Beth’s lecture on ultrasonic seed enhancement, intending to escort the professor to meet General Damon later; however, during the lecture, a number of the village zombies storm in and kidnap the professor. Adam and Megabyte return to Mulberrywood, only to find it deserted. Finding Jade, they enter the tunnels and encounter Mrs Toms, who babbles in terror about zombies. Meanwhile, several of the zombie-villagers arrive at Lucifer Hall and use a pod to take control of Byron. As the Worldex team searches the MOD base for the creature, the entity evades capture and takes over General Damon’s body. Leaving Jade with Mrs Toms, Adam and Megabyte teleport to the military base, only to learn from General Beaumont-Savage that Megabyte’s father and his team have now vacated the building. Sneaking into Bradley’s laboratory, the two Tomorrow People view a surveillance tape and watch the events leading up to the doctor’s attack. Realising that the pods and their spores are alien in nature, Adam and Megabyte surmise that Earth is under attack from an extraterrestrial threat; the zombies under alien control have captured Beth in order to obtain her audio frequency generator. Unless these invaders are stopped, they will use Beth’s machine to germinate their spores – and in a matter of hours they will have grown enough pods to take over the world…
